UK passport photo size: pixels, file size and 45×35mm prints
The correct “size” depends on whether you are applying online or on paper. Digital photos use pixel/file-size rules; printed passport photos use millimetres.
Online applications do not use the printed 45×35mm measurement.
Current GOV.UK guidance requires a digital photo to be at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, with a file size of at least 50KB and no more than 10MB.
750 pixels.
50KB to 10MB.
Paper applications need 2 identical 45×35mm photographs.
- 45mm high × 35mm wide
- Not a cut-down version of a larger picture
- Crown of head to chin between 29mm and 34mm
- Professional standard, clear and in focus
- Plain white photographic paper with no border
- Cream or light grey background
- Unaltered by computer software
The facial measurement applies to printed passport photographs. It is not a pixel rule for online uploads.
Avoid mixing digital rules with print rules.
Online applications care about pixels and file size, not a fixed millimetre canvas.
Paper passport applications require 2 identical printed photographs.
When using your own device, GOV.UK says not to crop the photo yourself.
