UK passport photo requirements: digital and printed rules

Digital photos for online applications and printed photos for paper forms follow different technical rules. Use the correct set for the application route you are actually using.

Digital vs printed

Do not apply printed measurements to an online image—or vice versa.

Digital photo for an online application

  • At least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall
  • 50KB to 10MB
  • Clear, sharp and in colour
  • Taken in the last month
  • Plain light-coloured background
  • Unaltered by computer software
  • If taken on your own device, include head, shoulders and upper body and do not crop it yourself

  • 45mm high × 35mm wide
  • Crown to chin: 29–34mm
  • Professional standard and in focus

  • Cream or light grey background

Face, expression and lighting

Most rejections come from the photograph itself, not the file name.

Face the camera

Look straight ahead with a plain expression and your mouth closed. Keep your whole face visible.

Use balanced light

Avoid shadows on your face or background, glare on glasses and red-eye.

Keep it natural

No beauty filters, facial retouching, background replacement or software “correction”.

Eyes visible

Hair, frames, reflections or tinted lenses must not obscure your eyes.

Head coverings

Only for religious or medical reasons; the face still needs to be clearly visible.

No other people or objects

The photograph should show only the applicant and a suitable plain background.

Babies and children

Younger children have specific exceptions.

Children must be alone in the picture. Children under 6 do not need to look directly at the camera or keep a plain expression. Babies under 1 do not need to have their eyes open. A supporting hand must not appear in the image.

Take or upload from your phone

Use the website or open our current iOS/Android apps. The underlying passport-photo rules remain the same whichever route you use.

FAQs

Common UK passport photo questions.

Can I edit or replace the background?

No. Current GOV.UK digital-photo rules require an unedited photograph. If the background or lighting is unsuitable, retake the photo.

Can I crop my own digital passport photo?

GOV.UK says that when using a photo taken on your own device, include your head, shoulders and upper body and do not crop it yourself.

Do printed passport photos need to be exactly 45×35mm?

Yes. GOV.UK states that printed passport photos must be 45mm high by 35mm wide.

Does passing an online checker guarantee acceptance?

No. A checker can help identify technical or visual issues, but HM Passport Office decides whether the photograph is accepted.
