Need a new photo for a UK driving licence? The correct route depends on whether you are applying for your first provisional licence, renewing or changing the photo on an existing licence, or applying by post. DVLA’s current online services can use identity-photo information in different ways, so do not assume a passport photo code is accepted for a driving licence application.
First provisional driving licence
GOV.UK says you can apply online for your first provisional driving licence. During the service you may be asked to prove your identity, usually using photo ID such as a passport. DVLA’s service design also supports applicants who need to provide a digital photograph.
Check the current first provisional licence service on GOV.UK.
Changing the photo on an existing licence
If you want to update the photograph on a full or provisional driving licence, GOV.UK says you need to renew the licence. When renewing online, you can use your passport photo or upload a new one when the service allows it.
Check the current DVLA photo-renewal service.
Applying by post
For postal photo renewal, GOV.UK currently asks for a recent printed passport-type photograph with the D1 application. Other postal driving-licence applications can have different identity and certification requirements, so use the instructions supplied with the form.
Can you use a UK passport photo?
A passport-style photograph can be relevant to DVLA postal applications, and online DVLA services may let you use a passport photo or upload a new photograph. However, a UK passport photo code is designed for the passport application process and should not be assumed to work in a DVLA journey unless the DVLA service specifically asks for it.
Taking a fresh photo with your phone
If an online DVLA service asks you to upload a new photo, follow the instructions shown inside that application. For general identity-photo technique, use even lighting, a plain background and a clear recent image. Avoid beauty filters or edits that change your appearance.
For passport-specific rules, see our UK passport photo requirements. For phone photography, see how to take an identity-style photo with a phone.
